In a truly unexpected moment this week National Hockey Legend legend Patrick Roy announced he was leaving the Colorado Avalanche as the organizations head coach. At the time of the announcement it was unclear what prompted the departure of Roy, but based on comments he has made since it appears that a difference in philosophical visions between him and fellow legend Joe Sakic may have been the catalyst for the move.

The question now becomes what is the next step for the legendary NHL goaltender? ESPN senior writer Scott Burnside did his best to speculate about potential destinations for Roy and he believes there are three realistic spots for Roy to continue his career as a head coach.

The first on Burnside's list is Quebec City:

If Quebec City is really ever going to get back in the NHL, Roy would certainly be a natural fit, the hometown hero bringing the NHL back home. The storylines don't get much better than that if you're a fan of hockey in Quebec City.

There's also his former team the Montreal Canadiens who could provide an interesting option again according to Burnside:

Already folks on social media are suggesting Roy's departure from Colorado turns up the heat on current Habs coach Michel Therrien.

The final suggestion from Burnside is possibly the most interesting, primarily because it's one that could see Roy take over as head coach effective immediately. Burnside's take on the possibility of Roy as the head coach in Las Vegas:

Roy's profile might be more valuable than his coaching acumen, but his potential presence with an expansion franchise can't be ignored, at least if only for discussion purposes, by new Vegas GM George McPhee.
