Rumor: Trade brewing between Eastern conference rivals?

There's considerable chatter surrounding Alex Galchenyuk these days.

The Montreal Canadiens have been actively shopping Alex Galchenyuk since June. That's a fact.

There have been tons of rumors circulating from top insiders, including the likes of Elliotte Friedman, Bob McKenzie, and Darren Dreger about talks that have occurred with teams such as the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.

Galchenyuk, 23, already has a 30-goal season under his belt. After a rough start to the season in Montreal, he's finally finding the back of the net and earning more important roles with the team after being demoted to the fourth line. He found himself on the top line with Jonathan Drouin Saturday night against the Winnipeg Jets and eventually fed Max Pacioretty for the overtime winner in a thrilling come from behind victory.

With his stock slowly rising again, the third overall pick in 2012 is being mentioned in a new rumor with the Philadelphia Flyers. The source is rather dubious, admittedly, as his track record hasn't yielded consistent "realities" as far as his trade rumors have gone, but Eklund from Hockey Buzz mentioned this morning that Ron Hextall and Marc Bergevin have indeed been having discussions surrounding Galchenyuk.

If accurate, it appears that the desired return would be coveted young defenseman Travis Sanheim. The 17th overall pick in 2014 finally cracked the NHL this season, but is unlikely to be traded anytime in the near future, as the Flyers are dealing with a bevy of injuries to key defensemen. When their men return to good health, it is possible that a trade of this magnitude materializes.

That is, if Bergevin doesn't do the dance with another general manager beforehand.

We generally take rumors from Eklund with a grain of salt - but it is interesting nonetheless. The fit is there for both teams.
