Rumor: Wings eyeing Islanders defender

It’s not secret that the Detroit Red Wings need some help on the blue line. Despite trading Brendan Smith to the New York Rangers at the NHL’s Trade Deadline, the team has been searching for top-end and depth defensemen for a few seasons now. It seems whenever someone becomes available, Wings general manager Ken Holland is linked to the negotiations. 

It should come as no surprise then that when NHL insider Elliotte Friedman speculated on possible destinations for New York Islanders defender Calvin de Haan that he named the Detroit Red Wings.

Friedman reports that the Islanders are wary of losing de Haan to the Vegas Golden Knights in the upcoming NHL Expansion Draft for nothing and would be interested in shipping the 26 year-old for at least some return. The former 12th overall draft pick of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, hasn’t exactly lived up to lofty expectations, but is a solid defender nonetheless. And he certainly adds an element that the Wings are currently lacking.
