It sounds like we might be headed for something of an odd reunion in the National Hockey League.

There have been some small rumblings regarding a potential return to Ottawa for current Dallas Stars forward Jason Spezza as of late and they may actually turn out to be more than mere rumblings. Spezza of course is a former member of the Ottawa Senators organization and by all accounts it sounds like both he and the Dallas Stars will be looking to part ways this summer as the Stars are in win now mode and Spezza is objectively in the twilight of his career. In fact the rumors around Sepzza have been loud enough that recently the veteran forward was asked about the possibility of a return to his former team. Spezza said it was too early to say but clearly did not shut the door on the idea of a possible return.

“It’s still early in this process but I have a good relationship with the people in Ottawa that are still there,” Spezza said as per NHL insider Pierre LeBrun. “It would be high on my list of considerations that’s for sure. I left there on good terms. It definitely keeps the door open. It’s food for thought, for sure. But it’s so early in the process, we’ll see.’’

It is interesting that Spezza feels he left the organization on good terms as he in fact demanded to be traded by the team, while he was their captain no less, prior to being moved to the Dallas Stars. In spite of that it seems the team was amendable to that demand if they have indeed maintained a good relationship with their former captain and now it sounds like they might even be open to the idea of bringing him back. It was just a throw away comment from Sportsnet's NHL insider Elliotte Friedman today but he did indeed touch on the possibility of a return to Ottawa for Spezza.

"I think the Senators are going to investigate the possibility of bringing back Jason Spezza," wrote Friedman.

The move may not make sense from a competitive stand point, but remember the position the Senators are currently in. Most of their core is gone via trade or free agency so they have no real leadership for their young stars and they need to spend this summer just to hit the salary cap floor. Spezza could come in on a one year deal to earn himself one last big payday during his NHL career and he could do so while providing value to the Senators in return.
