Rumors that NHL captain could be traded for young defenseman in huge player for player deal.

There is speculation of a huge trade in the National Hockey League.

One of the worst kept secrets in the National Hockey League is the willingness of Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic to trade one of his core forwards for help on the defensive end. That list of core forwards reportedly includes players like Matt Duchene and even the team's captain Gabriel Landeskog.

Reporter Lyle Richardson of the Hockey News believes he may have the perfect solution for the Avalanche, one that allows them to solve their problem while also helping another team alleviate a problem of their own.

Richardson believes that with the sheer depth on defense for the Anaheim Ducks, trading one of their defensemen, specifically Cam Fowler, prior to the expansion would be in the best long-term interest of the team. Richardson believes that a trade with Colorado would make a lot of sense:

The Ducks depth in defensemen, however, means they risk losing a quality blueliner such as Fowler to the expansion draft in June. As they lack experienced skilled depth at left wing, perhaps a swap of Fowler for Landeskog is possible.

It would me a massive player for player trade, and exactly the kind of major shake up the Avalanche and Sakic are looking for, however a trade of this magnitude is likely to come closer to the deadline, when both general managers know in which direction their team is head late in the season.
