The Hall of Famer has been the Panthers' assistant GM since 2019.
With general manager vacancies in Toronto, Nashville and New Jersey and with GM's in Detroit, Vancouver, Winnipeg, New York (Rangers) all on the hot seat there are plenty of rumors circulating on social media these days.
There's speculation that Hall of Famer and former Leafs executive Brendan Shanahan will take an executive role with the New Jersey Devils and today there's another Hall of Famer factoring into rumors.
Multiple online sources have indicated that Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito may step down from his position with the team and perhaps accept a promotion to become the team's President or Director of Hockey Operations. This move would enable assistant GM and 2022 HoF inductee Roberto Luongo to take over the GM position.
Luongo has been the Panthers' assistant GM since 2019 and has been integral in the team's back to back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.
It's only a matter of time until other teams come calling for Luongo and so it makes sense for the Panthers to promote him within before they risk losing him to another opportunity.
