Rumors that Vigneault could be replaced by former Flyers forward

A little back to the future change in Philly?

Lost in all the consternation over the New York Islanders at the basement of the NHL's Metropolitan Division is the fact that Philadelphia Flyers aren't faring much better. Both the Islanders and the Flyers are well out a playoff spot at the bottom of their division, but the Flyers don't seem to be commanding as much attention as the Islanders, despite the fact that the Flyers are on a six game skid.

The Flyers are currently 8-8-4 with 20 points in 20 games and are at serious risk of missing the playoffs for the second season in a row. If things continue down this path then you have to figure veteran head coach Alain Vigneault will pay the price, but Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman isn't so sure.

On the latest episode of The Jeff Marek Show on Sportsnet's 590 radio, Friedman reported that Flyers ownership isn't interested in paying Vigneault for nothing and are unlikely to dismiss him simply because they can't afford it. In the same breath though, Friedman wonders if former Flyers forward turned head coach turned media analyst Rick Tocchet could be an option to replace Vigneault if indeed the Flyers give AV the axe.

From Friedman:

"Alain Vigneault has term left, I think teams are really not thrilled about eating money right now coming out of COVID, they're definitely not interested in that...I've wondered about a guy like Rick Tocchet, it's just me kind of speculating".

Any way you look at it, change is needed in Philly. While Vigneault may have sparked this team at times, it's clear that things are getting stale in Philly. Tocchet will provide a spark, no doubt... but well... he hasn't exactly had much success behind an NHL bench outside of his stint as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Thoughts, Flyers fans?
