Rumor: Flames to make a move to solve backup goalie situation
KeyStone Press

Last night was the first game netminder Mike Smith missed for the Calgary Flames and it was a wreck. The Canadian team lost 8-2 to the Detroit Red Wings, and exposed a major problem in the Flames backup goalie situation.

According to TheScore, the Flames need to solve the backup goalie situation immediately, and even suggest three interesting candidate to help the team in between the pipes.

The first player suggested is Andrew Hammond, who was shipped out to the Colorado Avalanche as part of the three-way trade that sent Matt Duchene to the Ottawa Senators. The netminder has been kept in the minors, and several NHL insiders indicated that GM Joe Sakic could be looking to move him again.

If not, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to move Calvin Pickard, who was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights. He too is hanging out in the minors, but is an appealing option with his 2.45 goals-against average.

The Flames could also look at the Stockton Flames where David Rittich has gone 4-1-0 with a 2.20 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage this season.

The three options are good ones and Flames management need to consider them for the Flames' future. Smith, who did not join the team on their current trip, cannot take care of the whole game load and will need a trustworthy backup.

Let's see the Flames' next move...
