Preliminary talks have reportedly begun in order to move the Capitals from Washington to Northern Virginia. According to the Washington Post, Caps owner Ted Leonsis isn’t apparently not happy with the zone in which the Capital One Arena is and the investments of the city. Leonsis also owns the arena, which opened in 1997.
Therefore, the Post reports that representatives from Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Capitals, Wizards and Washington Mystics, have had exploratory talks regarding a possible arena site near Amazon’s new HQ2 development in the National Landing area of Arlington.
The Post adds that Leonsis and other team executives have also been meeting with Washington city officials regarding the need to improve the arena and who would pay for it. Amazon officially opened the first phase of its HQ2 development earlier in June. The project and it is believed that it could bring 25,000 employees to National Landing.
If the deal is approved, as expected, among the new ownership team’s first tasks will be to find a new site for the Commanders stadium to replace FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
That could then lead to a move of the Capitals, about nine kilometres away from their current home ice.
This sure sounds simpler to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman than relocating his beloved Arizona Coyotes.
