Ryan O'Reilly injured on Saturday night.
The Maple Leafs lose their big deadline acquisition.
It was a rough time to be a Toronto Maple Leafs forward on Saturday night.
First, the Leafs were given quite a scare in the game's first period when star forward Auston Matthews went down in pain after being struck by a shot , one that would send him back to the Maple Leafs locker room. Things got even scarier when Matthews did not initially come out for the second period, but the team was able to breathe a collective sigh of relief when he did make his way back to the Maple Leafs bench six minutes into the period.
At that point it seemed as though the Maple Leafs had dodged a bullet, but unfortunately there was more to come. After Matthews got back on the bench, Maple Leafs forward Ryan O'Reilly was also injured when he was struck by a shot, one that also forced him to retreat to the locker room.
Unlike Matthews before him however, O'Reilly has not returned to the game and it would appear that he was in fact injured on the play.
Here is a look at the shot that led to the injury:
Fans are going to be having flashbacks to the Nick Foligno trade and how that played out for the Maple Leafs, but it is still too early to panic given that we don't have an update on O'Reilly's status just yet.
