Skinner has just become a punching bag at this point lol
In case you missed it last night, the Edmonton Oilers' slide down the NHL's standings continued thanks to a 5-1 waxing from the lowly Buffalo Sabres.
The Oilers are now 9-8-4 to start the season and are 2nd worst in the league in goals against. Goaltending has been a huge issue for this team, yet again. Who could have foreseen this coming?
The Oilers' tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard has struggled to deliver even average goaltending the past few seasons but this year things have dipped even further. Skinner ranks 52nd league wide in save percentage, while Pickard ranks 74th. To be clear, only 75 goalies have suited up for action this season.
So, because these two goaltenders have struggled this season and because fans seem to revel in the Oilers' misery, both Skinner and Pickard have become punching bags for fans. Skinner especially so.
There have been dozens of jokes and memes tossed around about Skinner, but last night was the first time I can recall a member of the media getting in on the joke. With the Sabres up 5-1 late in the game and with the Oilers pulling Skinner for an advantage, Sabres broadcaster Rob Ray took his chance to deliver a zinger.
Check it out:
"Empty net for Edmonton. Well... it has been for most of the night, so what's the difference?"
Classic.
You can alway count on Rayzor to call it like it is with a wink and a smile.
