Sabres set poor record attendance for season opener

Embarrassing despite the win…

Chris Gosselin

The Buffalo Sabres might be trying to prove their fanbase they deserve to be seen and encouraged. That sure sounded like the statement they made on Thursday night when they beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 in their season opener.

However, only 8,467 fans were in attendance to watch the Sabres’ victory, and a lot of them wore the Habs’ colour. The average attendance was just over one third capacity.

Many reporters noted the poor attendance numbers are were blatant about it. This is what Adam Unger had to say:

“Maybe more positive results on the ice will change it. Or maybe the numbers will improve whenever the border reopens. Or maybe trading you-know-who will and closing that saga will change it. Hopefully something will.”

There is still a lot of question marks around the Sabres, their ownership and what will happen next to Jack Eichel and the pending trade everyone’s been talking about.

The Sabres did look good last night and fans should have been excited that hockey is back and fans are allowed in the arena. However, it might be time for the team and its management to invest in pleasing the fanbase, who hasn’t seen this team make the postseason in over 10 years.
