The Buffalo Sabres have a brand new captain for the 2022-23 season.

According to an official announcement from the Sabres organization, veteran forward Kyle Okposo has been named the team's new captain and will have the honor of being the 20th captain in the history of the Buffalo Sabres franchise. Okposo has been with the Sabres through some very difficult years and his appointment to the role will no doubt be well received by a fan base that has long viewed Okposo in a favorable light.

The Sabres have released a great video to commemorate the announcement, but the biggest take away from the video package is no doubt Okposo's commitment to the franchise. Okposo spoke highly of his time with the Sabres in spite of the fact that he has been through many losing seasons with the franchise.  He also spoke of how the Sabres' decision to make a long-term commitment to him as a player instilled in him a desire to succeed in Buffalo.

"I signed a seven year deal and it created a sense of duty in me that I had to this organization," said Okposo. "That's kind of how it started."

That was followed up by his family establishing roots in the area, cementing his connection not only to the Sabres organization but to the City of Buffalo as a whole.

"Where it's grown into is the fact that I've grown up as a person, I've become a little bit more mature, I've had children here, I've watched my kids grow up in this community and it's left a really special place in my heart," said Okposo. "I want this place to succeed, I want the Sabres to succeed."

Joining Okposo as part of the franchises new leadership group will be Zemgus Girgensons and Rasmus Dahlin, both of whom will serve as alternate captains alongside him.
