Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett did not manage to put his name on the scoresheet in his team's 6-5 victory over the Colorado Avalanche last night, but the young player ended up wearing the Calgary Police Service hat handed out by teammates to the player of the game.

Why, you ask. Because the kid earned his teammates' respect by jumping on a rival player in an epic game-altering fight.

With the Flames down 4-1 in a game where they should have been on top, Bennett took exception to a hellacious second-period hit by Ian Cole on his teammate Mark Jankowski. While the Avalanche defenseman received a game misconduct for charging, it wasn't enough for Bennett.

The Flames forward immediately grabbed the offender and delivered a long series of heavy right hands. It was as if we were back in the good ole days, and the crowd ate it up.

You can see the fight in the video here below:

While Bennett served his 17 minutes of penalties for vigilante justice, but it got the Flames going as they completed the comeback in a brilliant fashion. Bennett did not see all of the action, but his reaction to the hit and the way he stood up for his teammate were the driving force of the Flames' success.

“I was in the training room getting a little work done on my hands and missed (Elias Lindholm’s goal 47 seconds into the third),” said Bennett, sporting a series of scrapes on his nose and both hands. “Then I started to ride the bike and keep my legs loose because I knew I wasn’t going to be out for a bit — we scored another goal there.

Another one I didn’t even see because I was in here changing, and when we scored to tie it, someone came in and yelled that we tied it up.”

So, while he did not put his name on the scoresheet, his teammates were unanimous that Bennett deserved to be name the player of the game.

“He’s a feisty little kid,” smiled Mikael Backlund.

“He definitely knows how to throw em’ and that gave us momentum. We were down 4-1. That’s a great job for him stepping up for the team and for Janko. It brought a lot of energy into the room for the third. Benny started it for sure.”
