The Montreal Canadiens have just come off of a disappointing showing against the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final, and with the Canadiens now officially out of playoff contention it sounds like the team has quickly turned their focus towards the future.

That is a future that it now sounds like will not feature Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault, this in spite of the fact that Montembeault has taken a prominent role, and has even been the starting netminder, for the Canadiens over the last few seasons. Although Montembeault has been an important player at times for the Canadiens, National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun recently made it abundantly clear that Montembeault's time with this team has run its course.

"Samuel Montembeault is not gonna play another game for the Montreal Canadiens," said LeBrun on Oilers Now. "

Montembeault lost his starting job this season after recording a 3.43 goals against average and a .872 save percentage over 25 games for the Canadiens, with Jakub Dobes stepping up and taking over the reigns as the Habs #1 goalie. Dobes took on the bulk of the workload, appearing in 43 games this past season, and had a 2.78 goals against average and a .901 save percentage, both significant improvements over Montembeault despite Dobes playing many more games.

LeBrun believes that change is a permanent one in the eyes of the Canadiens.

"They are gonna have to move him," said LeBrun. "He is a backup at this point."

The Canadiens also have Jacob Fowler in their system who also outperformed Montembeault at the NHL level this past season, with Fowler recording a 2.43 goals against average and a .908 save percentage over 17 regular season games.

That leaves very little room, or appetite, to bring back Montembeault for another season and as a result it seems his time in Montreal has come to an end.
