Scandal brewing in Toronto after Keith Pelley’s shocking press conference

Uh oh… Toronto drawing heat from around the league

The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again in the spotlight, but not for anything happening on the ice.

During Tuesday’s press conference, MLSE president Keith Pelley had an opportunity to offer clarity and reassurance to a fanbase desperate for direction. Instead, his comments sparked confusion and reportedly frustration across the NHL.

Rather than focusing solely on Toronto’s path forward, Pelley raised eyebrows by openly praising the rebuilds of the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres, two direct rivals. While acknowledging strong work from opposing organizations isn’t unheard of, what truly caught attention was what came next.

Pelley went a step further, specifically mentioning Canadiens prospect Michael Hage by name: a player who, under different circumstances, could have ended up in the Maple Leafs system. It’s a rare move, especially given the historic rivalry between Toronto and Montreal, and one that didn’t go unnoticed.

According to Darren Dreger, speaking on TSN 690, the Canadiens organization was far from pleased with the public mention. The Sabres, despite also receiving praise, reportedly weren’t thrilled either.

Around the league, the reaction has been less about compliments and more about confusion over why Toronto chose to highlight other teams at all.

For Leafs fans, the moment only added to a growing sense of uncertainty. With expectations always sky-high in Toronto, many were hoping for a clear vision or decisive messaging. Instead, they got a press conference that raised more questions than answers, and may have unintentionally stirred tensions with rival franchises.

As the Leafs look ahead, the focus now shifts to whether this moment becomes just a footnote or another sign of instability surrounding one of hockey’s most scrutinized teams.
