Has he coached his final game?
The Winnipeg Jets rattled off their 9th consecutive loss on Sunday afternoon and that would be bad enough in its own right, but the manner in which the Jets lost the game could very well be what costs head coach Scott Arniel his job.
The Jets faced off against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes, on Sunday and it was a massacre on the part of the Hurricanes from start to finish.
The Hurricanes would begin by chasing goaltender Stuart Skinner from the net, with Skinner giving up 5 goals on just 17 shots. Goaltender Clay Stevenson stepped in at that point but even he would give up 2 more goals before the game would mercifully come to an end, a 7 -0 blowout in favor of the Hurricanes.
Following the conclusion of the game, Arniel admitted that it was an "embarrassing" loss for the Jets organization but pushed back when asked if he was worried about his job security.
"Not on my mind," said Arniel. "I've been in this game a long long time, that's beyond my control. My job is to get these players ready to go."
Although Arniel admitted it was his job to prepare the players, he also made sure to shift the blame in their direction as well.
"I'm doing everything I possibly can with my coaching staff to get these guys ready to go but once the puck drops... these guys also have to take some responsibility as well," said Arniel.
It seems unlikely that this will continue for much longer if things continue to trend in the wrong direction, but whether or not Arniel will be the first domino to fall remains to be seen.
