Seattle hilariously welcomes back a “true Kraken legend.”
This was genius.
In spite of the fact that there was a ton of hype coming into the season, the Seattle Kraken have not given their fans a great deal to cheer about through roughly the first quarter of the season. The Kraken currently dwell at the bottom of the Pacific Division with just 5 wins through their first 18 games of the season, and any thoughts of them coming out of the gate hot like the Las Vegas Golden Knights had done in the recent past have gone out the window.
In spite of that it has been obvious that everyone attending the games in Seattle has been having a great time and the Kraken franchise deserves a ton of credit for putting on an entertaining show, and realistically an expansion team should expect a bumpy start in the National Hockey League.
On Sunday night the Kraken pulled off what I think may have been their most comical stunt yet, when they decided to honor a tradition that has become very commonplace in the NHL. That tradition is the playing of a tribute video for a former player when he returns for the first time as a member of a rival team.
Now you might be wondering, how could the Kraken do this given that this is their very first season with the very first roster of players in franchise history. Well the answer is that the Kraken we're just being trolls, and the tribute video turned out to be for former Kraken goaltender Vitek Vanecek.
There's just one problem of course, Vanecek never actually played a single game for the Kraken during his time with the team. In fact after being selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft, Vanecek would quickly be traded back to the team he was picked from just 7 days later.
The end result was one of the funniest, and shortest, tribute videos you will likely ever see in the NHL. The highlight package consisted of Vanecek being drafted by the team, his name appearing on a board, and that's it. The Kraken even went so far as to photoshop their own logo on top of what is clearly a Capitals jersey for the closing shot of the video.
I hope you laugh as much as I did.
