The National Hockey League roster freeze is officially in effect until the 22nd of February but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from remaining very active around the league.

One of the teams at the center of many of these rumors has been the Calgary Flames, with the Flames having a number of talented veteran players on their roster despite being well out of the playoff picture. It may be a good position for the Flames to be in as well with reports now suggesting that multiple playoff hopefuls are looking to acquire the same player from the Flames roster.

Recently, Senators insider Bruce Garrioch shared comments from an NHL executive regarding the likely possibility that Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar will be dealt before the deadline.

"He’s underrated," said an NHL executive as per Garrioach. "He plays high minutes, competes hard and he plays in every situation. I know they traded him from Florida to get [Matthew] Tkachuk, but Weegar was playing with [Aaron] Ekblad."

It would seem the Senators believe that Weegar is underrated as well with the Senators reportedly expressing serious interest in the player. Unfortunately for the Senators it sounds like they will be facing some stiff competition from within their own division, with Weegar also on the radar of the Atlantic Division's Detroit Red Wings. In fact, according to Garrioch, the Red Wings may have already engaged in talks with the Flames, although they will have to wait until after the 22nd to make anything official.

Weegar is having another solid season with 3 goals and 17 assists for 20 points, doing so while playing in every single one of the Flames' 56 games this season.

Only time will tell if Weegar finds himself with a new home after the Olympic roster freeze comes to an end.
