Senators cut 7 players on Sunday... but it's not enough.

The Senators must make another move before the rosters lock in on Monday.

Around the National Hockey League on Sunday we saw numerous teams make what were the final roster cuts of training camp and the preseason for those teams, but the Ottawa Senators are doing things a little different.

While the Senators did announce a number of roster cuts on Sunday, they are still over the roster limit which must be reached by Monday Oct 6th, meaning that there is very likely another move or another roster cut that the Senators are waiting to announce.

First let's look at the moves they did make. The Senators began the day by waiving the following players:

Jan Jenik
Hayden Hodgson
Olle Lycksell
Arthur Kaliyev
Lassi Thomson
Mads Sogaard

It was a very busy day on waivers in the NHL with a whopping 43 players getting placed on waivers, so odds are that the Senators aren't likely to have to worry about one of their players being claimed this close to the start of the season. That being said stranger things have happened so it remains a possibility.

The Senators also made the move to assign forward Stephen Halliday to the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League, with Halliday being waiver exempt and therefore avoiding the possibility of being claimed.

The interesting detail here is that this brings the Senators down to 24 players, one player more than the NHL's regular season roster limit. This means that there is one more cut to be made, either that or the Senators will have to make another move to get a player off their roster like a potential trade for example.

Rookie defenseman Carter Yakemchuk seems like the obvious candidate at this point although it remains unclear if the Senators intend to bring him up to the NHL level at the young age of just 20 years old. Yakemchuk, the 7th overall pick at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft has looked solid in training camp and there could be someone else that gets cut from the roster.
