The Ottawa Senators have pulled off the first trade of the day.
According to a breaking news report from Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman the Senators have traded veteran forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Colorado Avalanche.
Update: According to Ottawa Senators insider Bruce Garrioch the Senators have received a 4th round draft pick in exchange for sending Namestnikov to the Colorado Avalanche.
This move makes a ton of sense from the perspective of the Ottawa Senators who initially acquired Namestnikov for a 4th round pick of their own earlier in the season. That trade, one that the Senators consummated with the New York Rangers, effectively gave the Senators a flexible veteran presence in their forward group for the majority of the regular season and now in the end it has effectively cost them nothing. Ottawa Senators general manager Bruce Garrioch was able to recoup the 4th round pick that he initially paid for Namestnikov so although this is a relatively minor trade it looks like a very shrewd one from the Senators general manager.
