Senators' key defenceman soon to be traded?

The next few days are going to be extremely interesting in the NHL. General managers are looking at all their options and are preparing their strategy for the expansion draft, which is going to be held on June 21. Ottawa Senators' GM, Pierre Dorion, is no different.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Dorion said he "would discuss internally" the possibility of asking Phaneuf to waive his no-movement clause.

"Dorion isn’t commenting, but word is Phaneuf was indeed asked to waive. That would allow Ottawa to protect Cody Ceci, Erik Karlsson and Marc Methot. I think the Senators have been asked a lot about Ceci over the past year, but they wisely held on. We’ll see what Phaneuf decides. I think Ottawa is sensitive to this one, because they feel Phaneuf has been a terrific teammate since he got there."

What if the 32-year-old does not want to cooperate with Dorion? Should we be expecting a trade soon?

Phaneuf recorded nine goals and 21 assists in 81 games with Ottawa last season, as well as 100 penalty minutes. He joined the Sens on February 9, 2016, in a nine-player trade.
