This offseason is going to be fire!
UPDATE: It's official, the Senators have acquired William Eklund along with prospects Kasper Haltunen and Brandon Svoboda in exchange for the 9th overall pick in Fridays' NHL Draft.
The Ottawa Senators have wasted no time moving on from Brady Tkachuk.
According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Sens have acquired 23 year old forward William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks.
Details of the trade to come.
From the moment he arrived in the NHL, Eklund looked like a player capable of becoming a cornerstone piece. Drafted seventh overall by the San Jose Sharks in 2021, the skilled Swedish winger quickly established himself as one of the organization's brightest young talents. Eklund's creativity, vision, and playmaking ability helped him stand out during some difficult rebuilding years in San Jose. While the Sharks struggled to find consistent success in the standings, Eklund continued to develop into a reliable top-six forward, showcasing the offensive instincts that made him such a highly regarded prospect. His ability to create scoring chances and drive possession made him one of the few bright spots on a rebuilding roster, and by his early twenties he had already become one of the team's most important offensive players.
Now, as a member of the Ottawa Senators, Eklund gets the fresh start many around the league believed he deserved. Joining an Ottawa club that has emerged as a playoff contender, he suddenly finds himself surrounded by far more offensive support and higher expectations. The Senators are hoping Eklund's elite hockey sense and puck-distribution skills will complement their young core and help elevate the team's attack to another level. For Eklund, the move represents an opportunity to prove that he can be more than just a productive player on a rebuilding team — he can be a difference-maker on a club with Stanley Cup aspirations. If his development continues on its current trajectory, Ottawa may have acquired a player who is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential.
