This is all kinds of adorable.
The roar inside Capital One Arena said everything. As Alex Ovechkin's sons, Ilya and Sergei Ovechkin, introduced their father during the pre-game ceremony ahead of tonight's Washington Capitals home opener, the hometown crowd erupted for the man who has spent more than two decades turning himself into a Washington sports icon.
It was a fittingly emotional start to what will be Ovechkin's final home opener.
Earlier this week, the 41-year-old Capitals captain announced that the 2026-27 NHL season will be the final season of his legendary career. Ovechkin explained that he and his family made the decision over the summer, bringing an end to a career that began with his NHL debut on Oct. 5, 2005 — exactly 21 years before his retirement announcement.
Now, every time Ovechkin steps onto the ice at Capital One Arena carries a little more weight.
For Washington fans, it is difficult to overstate just how much Ovechkin has meant to the franchise and the city. The Capitals selected him first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft, and after the lost 2004-05 season, he finally arrived in Washington in October 2005. He immediately announced himself with two goals and a thunderous hit against the Columbus Blue Jackets in his NHL debut.
What followed was one of the greatest individual careers the sport has ever seen.
Ovechkin enters this final season as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, having already surpassed Wayne Gretzky's seemingly untouchable record with his 895th goal in April 2025. He currently sits at 929 career goals, along with 1,688 points in 1,575 games — all with the Capitals. He has also accumulated 14 40-goal seasons, 20 30-goal seasons and nine 50-goal seasons, tying him for the most 50-goal campaigns in league history.
And, of course, there is the Stanley Cup.
For years, Ovechkin's legacy was accompanied by the question of whether he could actually lead Washington to the championship. That question was finally answered in 2018, when Ovechkin lifted the Stanley Cup for the first time and delivered one of the most memorable championship celebrations in NHL history.
But his story in Washington has never been solely about statistics or trophies.
Ovechkin became the face of the Capitals, the personality who made hockey feel larger than life in Washington. His enormous smile, booming personality, relentless physical style and trademark one-timer helped make him one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. The fact that he has spent his entire NHL career with one organization has only strengthened that connection.
Tonight, against the Pittsburgh Penguins, another chapter begins.
There is an added sense of significance because the Penguins have been such an important part of Ovechkin's career. His rivalry with Sidney Crosby has stretched across nearly two decades and has become one of the defining individual rivalries of the NHL's modern era. Now, with both legends entering their 22nd NHL seasons, hockey fans are getting one final opportunity to watch them continue that journey.
Ovechkin still has plenty left to accomplish, too.
He is chasing 1,700 career points, needs just four assists to pass Nicklas Backstrom for the most assists in Capitals history and is 11 goals away from passing Gretzky for the most combined regular-season and playoff goals in NHL history. He is also chasing another 20-goal season, which would move him closer to Gordie Howe's record of 22.
But tonight isn't really about the numbers.
It is about appreciating the final ride.
The sight of Ilya and Sergei introducing their father before a roaring Washington crowd was a reminder that Ovechkin's career has never been just about Alex. His family has been there for the highs, the lows, the championships, the heartbreaks and the records.
Now, with one final season ahead of him, Washington gets to enjoy Ovechkin one more time.
And if the reception he received from the hometown crowd before tonight's game is any indication, Capitals fans have absolutely no intention of taking a single moment of this final season for granted.
