Tough moment being exposed by the new member of the Maple Leafs.
Sergei Bobrovsky spent seven seasons in Florida, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups and establishing himself as one of the most decorated goaltenders in Panthers history. He fully expected to remain there. But the organization had other plans, and the veteran netminder says one specific transaction told him everything he needed to know.
In his first interview with media as a member of the Maple Leafs, Bobrovsky revealed that he realized his time in Florida was over the moment the Panthers completed a trade for Jacob Markstrom. That deal, which brought Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils along with Angus Crookshank in exchange for Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist, and Ben Steeves, effectively sealed the goaltending picture in Sunrise without Bobrovsky in it.
The Panthers had also picked up backup Akira Schmid from the Vegas Golden Knights, further reinforcing the new direction between the pipes. With a fresh tandem in place, the 37-year-old was left on the outside looking in.
"It's been an amazing seven years for me," Bobrovsky said, expressing gratitude to the Panthers fanbase for their support throughout his tenure.
Rather than dwell on the rejection, Bobrovsky quickly pivoted to his next chapter. He signed with Toronto on a three-year contract carrying a $7 million AAV, a deal confirmed once free agency opened on July 1.
Speaking about his new team, Bobrovsky called Toronto a "great opportunity." The fit makes sense on paper. He already has a connection with Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz from their shared time in Florida, and Toronto has been searching for goaltending stability.
Bobrovsky's regular season numbers did decline last year. In 52 games with the Panthers, he posted an .877 save percentage and a 3.07 goals against average, a notable dip from his Vezina Trophy peak in Columbus. His postseason pedigree, however, remains a significant draw for a franchise that has been desperate to break through in the playoffs.
Bobrovsky now turns the page on a memorable run in Florida and prepares to take on one of the most pressure-filled markets in hockey.
