Many are questioning the conduct of the man involved in the incident, sparking heated debate online.
Earlier Wednesday, reports began circulating online that Gavin McKenna, star forward for Penn State men’s hockey and a projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, has been charged following an alleged incident last Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania.
According to State College Police, McKenna faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault involving “attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causing injury with extreme indifference,” along with simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct related to fighting. If convicted on the felony charge alone, McKenna could face up to 20 years in prison. He was released on $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 11.
Police reports indicate the altercation occurred outside a local establishment and required law enforcement intervention. While details remain limited, multiple sources and witnesses cited in online reports claim McKenna may have acted after seeing his mother, who was allegedly present, being verbally harassed by a 21-year-old man. According to those accounts, the man repeatedly shouted sexually degrading insults at her. McKenna allegedly struck the individual twice, resulting in a broken jaw.
In an official police statement, authorities confirmed the injured man required surgery to repair his jaw, which must remain wired shut for approximately two weeks.
However, scrutiny has increasingly turned toward the alleged victim, identified by multiple reports as Josh Coakley, a Penn State immunology student. Unverified claims circulating on social media allege Coakley has appeared publicly unbothered by the injury, including reports of him laughing and posing at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, acting like he won the lottery. These claims have not been independently verified.
The contrast between the severity of the charges against McKenna and the online behavior attributed to the alleged victim has fuelled debate, skepticism, and outrage among fans and observers, with many questioning whether the full context of the incident has yet to emerge.
As the legal process unfolds, McKenna’s future, both in hockey and beyond, remains uncertain, while the case continues to raise uncomfortable questions about accountability and provocation.
