The Carolina Hurricanes are getting a lump of coal for the holidays.

On Friday night the Hurricanes faced off against their bitter Eastern Conference rivals, the Florida Panthers, in what turned out to be another frustrating clash between these two teams from the Hurricanes perspective. Not only did the Hurricanes fail to exorcise their demons, giving up a third period lead to eventually lose in overtime, but they also lost one of their top players in the process.

Late in the game, Hurricanes star forward Seth Jarvis created a scoring chance by beating Panthers defenseman Evan Rodrigues on his path to the net but things would quickly go from scoring chance to total disaster for Jarvis. As Jarvis came around Rodrigues and continued to charge towards the net, he was tripped up by the Panthers defenseman which in turn sent Jarvis into the goalpost in violent fashion.

You can see the replay at full speed below:

Although there was no penalty called on the play, much to the frustration of the Hurricanes, it does appear based on the video evidence that Jarvis was in fact tripped into the net.

While we do not know the exact severity of the injury to Jarvis, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour has confirmed that he will miss time. Brind'Amour described the injury as "not good" and has stated that Jarvis is expected to be "out for a while" moving forward.
