Shane Doan's tenure with the Maple Leafs quickly comes to an end.
It has been rumored for some time but now it's official.
On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs and highly respected former National Hockey League player Shane Doan officially parted ways after weeks of rampant speculation about Doan's future within the organization. The news was first reported by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun who noted that it was unclear what the future has in store for Doan, although did add that Doan has met with other teams around the league including the Vancouver Canucks.
Following the report from LeBrun, the Maple Leafs have confirmed that Shane Doan is no longer with the team. According to Leafs reporter Lance Hornby, Doan served the same role for former Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving that Mats Sundin will now occupy alongside newly appointed Leafs general manager John Chayka.
It is worth noting that there is a sordid history between Chayka and Doan and that history may have made today's announcement an inevitable one. Chayka allegedly fired Doan in a cold and callous fashion when both men were with the Arizona Coyotes organization and there are many who believe that those wounds have still not healed for Doan who was inarguably the greatest ambassador in Coyotes history.
Due to how Chayka has already been received by many in the Toronto market, I suspect that this is a decision that will be met with a fair bit of criticism.
