The NHL offseason has already produced its share of blockbuster trades and shocking offer sheets, but another unexpected name has quietly entered the rumor mill.

Former fourth-overall pick Shane Wright is officially available.

It was reported earlier this month that the Seattle Kraken and Wright have reached an agreement that the 22-year-old center will be traded this summer. Wright’s agent, Kurt Overhardt confirmed that both sides are now working toward finding a new home for the young forward, ideally with a team looking to add a promising top-six center.

It marks a stunning turn for a player once viewed as the future of the Kraken franchise.

Wright has spent the past several seasons trying to establish himself at the NHL level while navigating a crowded depth chart in Seattle. Now, with just one year remaining on his entry-level contract, he suddenly becomes one of the more intriguing young players available on the trade market.

His contract only adds to the appeal.

As an affordable young center with significant upside, Wright could attract plenty of interest from teams pressed against the salary cap but still looking to improve down the middle. Seattle, however, reportedly has no intention of selling low. Elliotte Friedman indicated the Kraken are looking for what they consider a fair return and are prepared to be patient rather than rush into a deal.

One potential landing spot has already emerged.

James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now suggested the New Jersey Devils could pivot to Wright if their attempt to pry Barrett Hayton away from the Utah Mammoth via offer sheet ultimately falls through.

Wright would offer the Devils another young center with untapped offensive potential while likely costing less than some of the bigger names currently circulating in trade discussions.

Whether New Jersey or another club steps forward, Wright’s availability is likely to generate significant interest around the league.

For Seattle, the decision signals a willingness to move on from one of the organization’s most recognizable young players. For Wright, it may finally provide the fresh start many around the hockey world have believed he needed.
