A trade is on the horizon for the former first round pick.
An ugly chapter in the career of a once highly touted prospect appears to be quickly coming to a close.
22 year old forward Shane Wright was once projected to be the first overall pick in the 2022 National Hockey League Entry Draft, but fate would have other plans. Wright would fall down the draft board before eventually being claimed at #4 by the Seattle Kraken, and unfortunately his falling draft stock would foreshadow his struggles at the NHL level.
Since being drafted Wright has appeared in just 169 NHL games with 36 goals and 42 assists for a total of 78 points to his name, and has done so while playing in a limited role in the Kraken's lineup. Wright has been limited to a career average of less than 14 minutes of ice time per night, and it has become clear in recent months that Wright and the Kraken do not see eye to eye.
On Saturday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed what many already suspected when he revealed that Wright was looking for a way out of Seattle. The confirmation comes directly from Wright's agent, Kurt Overhardt.
"I can confirm that we have had positive conversations with GM Jason Botterill, and he has agreed to move Shane this summer to a team in need of a top young centre,” said Overhardt as per Friedman's report.
Wright has largely failed to live up to the expectations many had of him coming into his draft year and it has no doubt been frustrating for him to see his peers from that draft class, peers like Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens and Logan Cooley of the Utah Mammoth, achieve great success at the NHL level.
Whether or not Wright can change the narrative with a fresh start on a new team will remain to be seen.
