This is painful to watch…
The Seattle Kraken have positioned themselves as one of the more intriguing teams in the NHL trade market this fall. They are winning games and playing with confidence, but behind the scenes, the front office is actively reshaping the roster in a significant way.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Seattle has been searching for a top-line winger for quite some time and is prepared to part with one of its young centres to make that happen.
The name most prominently linked to that effort is Shane Wright.
Dreger reported that Wright's name has been circulating in trade discussions for several months and remains very much available. Perhaps more telling, his camp has reportedly been pushing for a move dating back to last January.
That timeline is notable. It suggests the desire for a fresh start is not a recent development but has been simmering for the better part of a year.
For general manager Jason Botterill, the challenge is clear. Seattle is not looking to sell low on Wright or any other young centre. The Kraken want a legitimate top-line winger in return, which sets a high bar for potential trade partners.
Wright, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, arrived in Seattle carrying significant expectations after being traded from the Montreal Canadiens organization. His pedigree as a former first-overall consensus pick who slid on draft night has always made him a polarizing asset, one whose perceived value can vary wildly depending on the evaluator.
The fact that Seattle is willing to move him only for premium offensive talent in return speaks to how the organization views his trade value. They are not desperate. They believe they hold cards worth playing and are waiting for the right match.
This has to be a tough blow for Wright, who expected to go first overall in the draft four years ago but is now increasingly aware that his value is dwindling and that he is not as desired as he would like…
All eyes remain on whether Botterill can find a trade partner willing to meet Seattle's asking price for Wright. The longer the former top prospect stays on the market, the more his value becomes a central talking point across the league.
