Sharks and Avs pull off a massive 7 piece trade in goalie swap
Whoa! Fans on both sides aren't pleased with this whopper!
This just in, the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche have hooked up on a massive, 7 part trade that sees the teams swap goaltenders.
Headed to Colorado are goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood and forward Givani Smith along with a 2027 5th round draft pick. In exchange the Sharks are getting Alexandar Georgiev (14% of salary retained by COL), forward Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2026 2nd round pick and a 2025 5th round pick.
Check it out:
This is an absolute whopper of a deal that has both fanbases shaking their heads a bit. Avs fans feel that they massively overpaid to acquire Blackwood, essentially a backup goaltender. On the other hand, the Sharks essentially handed their crease over to Georgiev and top prospect Yaroslav Askarov. Georgiev has been absolutely dreadful for Colorado this season and Askarov has shown that he maybe needs a bit more seasoning before being thrown into the fire with the Sharks.
The big difference to me is that the Avs need a goalie to put up wins NOW, while the Sharks can afford to take their time with Askarov. To me, the Avs are rolling the dice on their season by essentially going with two backup goaltenders.
In the past week and a half the Avs have essentially changed out their goaltending tandem, not an easy task to pull off mid-season. Out are Georgiev, Justus Annunnen and Kaapo Kahkonen and in are Blackwood and Wedgewood. It has essentially cost them just a 2nd round pick and a 6th round pick. Not terrible, in my mind. The question is "will it work?"
Can Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood take them to the Promised Land?
