We have a trade!
There is a relatively minor trade to report this evening with the Seattle Kraken and the San Jose Sharks coming to terms on a deal on Sunday night.
According to an official announcement from the Sharks organization, they have sent veteran defenseman Jaycob Megna to the Kraken in exchange for a fourth round draft pick at the 2023 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
A particularly interesting detail about this trade is that the Sharks will have the right to select which 4th round pick they want from the Kraken on June 15th, only a few short days before the draft itself. This means of course that, should the Kraken acquire another 4th round pick earlier in the draft, the Sharks will likely take it off their hands come the 15th of June.
The other piece of this trade is of course Megna who is a former 7th round pick (210th overall) of the Anaheim Ducks at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Although Megna has spent most of his professional career since being drafted in the American Hockey League, he earned himself a regular spot in the Sharks lineup last season and as a result of that has appeared in 48 regular season games for the Sharks this season. Megna has 1 goal and 11 assists for a total of 12 points over that stretch of play this season, and currently boasts a plus minus rating of +6 across those 48 games.
The Sharks also signed Megna to a 2 year contract following that strong season last year, which means that the Kraken will retain his services for both this season and the next barring another trade or potential waiver claim. Megna currently carries a very reasonable cap hit of $762,500 per season, although he will earn slightly more real dollars than that next season with a salary of $775,000.
