A terrible tragedy has struck the family of San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier and the sports world at large is in mourning as a result.

On Monday morning, the National Football League's Miami Dolphins officially announced the passing of longtime NFL executive Bobby Grier, the father of Mike Grier. Bobby was 82 years old.

Bobby worked in various roles around the NFL but his most notable role was a lengthy stint as a member of the New England Patriots front office. In 1993 Bobby was promoted to an executive role with the Patriots and he would serve in various roles in the team's front office, eventually rising to the rank of vice president of player personnel, all the way up until the end of the 2000 NFL Draft when Bobby made his exit.

Although Bobby is credited with a great deal during his tenure with the Patriots, perhaps his most lasting impact on the team was his role in heavily scouting a relatively unheralded sixth round pick at the time, a quarterback by the name of Tom Brady.

Bobby leaves behind a lasting legacy through his family as well, with his son Mike Grier of course playing in over 1000 National Hockey League games before becoming the general manager of the Sharks and serving as an executive in his own right. His other son, Chris Grier, also currently serves as general manager of the NFL's Miami Dolphins, which means that Bobby will continue to have a lasting impact on the sports world through his sons long after his passing.

I do hope the Grier family can find some solace in the incredible and lasting legacy that Bobby leaves behind.

My most sincere condolences go out to the Grier family, Mike and Chris Grier, the San Jose Sharks and the Miami Dolphins during this very difficult time.
