The San Jose Sharks have reportedly lost one of their young forwards to the waiver wire.

TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie was the first to break the news that the Colorado Avalanche had claimed 24-year-old Matthew Nieto. You have to feel for the young man who will have to deal with the unfortunate reality of going from a serious contender to the worst team in the National Hockey League in the blink of an eye.

The Avalanche, as the last placed team in the league, had top priority on waivers so we don't know if any other teams would have also attempted to claim Nieto. Sportsnet's Chris Johnston reports that this was indeed  the case, although he did not name which teams he believes were also looking to grab Nieto.
