The San Jose Sharks take a swing at trading for Simon Edvinsson.
The Detroit Red Wings have been forced into an incredibly awkward scenario where they are looking at having to trade two of their cornerstone franchise players, and the offers coming in from opposing teams likely aren't looking to do the Red Wings any favors.
One team that reportedly took a serious swing at acquiring defenseman Simon Edvinsson from the Red Wings however was the San Jose Sharks. After reports last week that the Sharks had made a significant offer to the Red Wings, Sharks insider Sheng Peng produced the names of 3 players who had been made available to the Red Wings in a potential trade.
The 3 players were reportedly former Sharks first round pick (27th overall) at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft Filip Bystedt, former Sharks first round pick (9th overall) at this year's NHL Entry Draft Keaton Verhoeff, and former Sharks second round pick (33rd overall) and the 2024 NHL Entry Draft Igor Chernyshov who is now in his second NHL season.
While those are significant assets, the issue for the Red Wings is that Edvinsson is a proven commodity, one you think they would have quickly moved to re-sign, while the players being offered are either prospects or still relatively unproven at the NHL level. I suspect it is for that reason that, at least for now, the Red Wings haven't pulled the trigger on this trade.
