Sharks sign young forward despite declining performance in junior.

The San Jose Sharks have announced a curious signing.

On Tuesday the team officially announced the signing of 20-year-old Manuel Wiederer, and it's curious because the former Sharks fifth round draft pick has shown a steady decline over his last three seasons in junior.

From the Sharks:

"Manuel mixes a defensively responsible two-way game with speed and offensive creativity and has proven that he can play with players much older than he is," said general manager Doug Wilson. "He takes pride in his defensive game, but has also shown that he can produce when asked to provide offense. We look forward to him developing his overall game with our organization."

Wiederer has seen less play this is true, but even when factoring in his number of games played, 30 in each of the last two seasons, this latest season saw his production drop by 7 points from 30 points in 30 games the previous year to just 23 in 30 this season.

It seems likely that Wiederer will report to the American Hockey League and will also likely serve in a depth role should he receive a call up to the NHL.
