Go ahead and take another free agent defenseman off the market, who is returning to his former club.
Shayne Gostisbehere, who played last season with the Detroit Red Wings and enjoyed a productive campaign with 56 points, is signing with the Carolina Hurricanes on a three-year contract. According to NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the deal carries an AAV of $3.2 million:
Gostisbehere tallied 10 goals with 46 assists in his only season with the Red Wings, and was a key part of the power play.
The Red Wings have several young defensemen in the system who are ready to make the next step, led by Swedish native Simon Edvinsson, who will likely make the team out of Training Camp this fall. In addition, the likes of Albert Johansson and William Wallinder are waiting in the wings.
