The Vegas Golden Knights have has acquired defenseman Dysin Mayo from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for defenseman Shea Weber and a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The news was first reported by Kevin Weekes. It was confirmed by the Golden Knights moments later.

Mayo played 82 games for the Coyotes from 2021-23 and put up 12 points and 35 penalty minutes. He was drafted by Arizona in the fifth round, 133rd overall in the 2014 NHL Draft.

As for Weber, it’s basically another hefty contract going to be buried in the desert. He played 1,038 NHL games from 2005-21 with the Nashville Predators and Montreal Canadiens, recording 589 points and 714 PIM. His last NHL appearance came in Game 5 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. Weber’s current contract runs through the 2025-26 season.

The Golden Knights were heading towards off-season cap issues, especially if Vegas looks to add a big salary with term. This move allows them to look at more options ahead of March 3rd. Weber’s contract has a $7.857M cap hit, although his actual salary is $1M per year starting next season. This is a low cash transaction for Arizona, while Vegas can now look at acquiring not just now but beyond this season, per Pierre LeBrun.

It's also an easy way for the Coyotes to reach the cap floor each of the next three seasons without having to pay much of Weber’s salary.

Mayo has been immediately assigned to the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.
