It was a big night for two key members of the team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs came into Pittsburgh last night and left with what they were looking for - two points and a solid, all around team victory. And it was a particularly satisfying win for goaltender Matt Murray, who earned his first victory as a member of the Leafs and did so against the team he helped lead to back to back Stanley Cup championships.
The Leafs certainly hope that it's a sign of things to come for Murray, on whom they took a major risk in acquiring him this past offseason from the Ottawa Senators. And according to head coach Sheldon Keefe, Murray did everything that was expected of him against the Penguins.
"I thought he was just really solid and calm," Keefe said of Murray's performance. "Especially when our team played well in front of him, any time there was any sort of activity or action around the net, it didn’t look like it was coming close to going in."
"I thought he just did his job for us. He kept them at two. It gave our group confidence through that flurry."
"Our goaltending has been pretty strong all the way through the season," he continued when discussing his team's depth. "When our team defense has been good in front of them, those guys have always given us a chance to win every night. That continued tonight with Matt."
"I am certainly happy with our depth there for sure."
Meanwhile, it was another key member of the Leafs in forward Michael Bunting who broke out of a lengthy goal scoring slump, coming through with a two goal, one assist performance.
"I thought it was Bunts’ best game of the season today in terms of how he held onto pucks, battled, and competed," Keefe said. "The goals, of course, are really great, but those are ones that will generally come when he plays like he did tonight. He was really good."
"I thought all four lines gave us really good moments here today. It was good to see Bunts come through, but Mitch and John got two big goals for us in the first period that got us going in the game. I thought we got really good efforts throughout the lineup."
The Leafs return home to face the red-hot New Jersey Devils tomorrow night at Scotiabank Arena.
