Sheldon Keefe sounds off on Matt Murray's goaltending performance.
The head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs was critical of his goaltender following another rough outing for Murray.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are already comfortably in the Stanley Cup playoff picture this season, but the team has had some hiccups as of late with issues on the back end. Notably the Maple Leafs have struggled to get consistent goaltending from veteran netminder Matt Murray, who has struggled both with injuries as well as between the pipes.
On Saturday night, Murray once again had a relatively lackluster performance as the Maple Leafs fell to the playoff bound Carolina Hurricanes, losing by a score of 5-3. The 5th goal was an empty netter, but Murray would give up 4 goals on just 27 shots on his way to an ugly .852 save percentage.
This has dropped Murray's overall numbers over 25 games this season to a 2.97 goals against average and a .905 save percentage, numbers that are frankly very similar to the 3.05 goals against average and .906 save percentage he posted over the course of his final 20 games with the Ottawa Senators
In fact when isolating Murray's play to this calendar year, things start to look even uglier. Since January first of this year, Murray has an abysmal 3.68 goals against average and a .858 save percentage over the course of 11 starts, troubling signs for the Maple Leafs.
It seems clear the Leafs themselves have taken notice, with Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe openly criticizing Murray following Saturday night's loss to the Hurricanes
"I thought he did a good job for us. But of course, it's difficult to win with any sort of regularity if you have to score more than four," admitted Keefe. "Matt's got to find a way to keep one or two of those out."
