Sheldon Keefe unveils his plans for Dennis Hildeby.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been forced to make some major adjustments to their goaltending position in the wake of terrible play from Ilya Samsonov, the presumed starting goaltender coming into the 2023-24 National Hockey League regular season for the Maple Leafs.

Among those adjustments has been the call up of gigantic goaltender Dennis Hildeby which was officially made on Monday morning, a call up that according to many insiders the Maple Leafs were trying to avoid having to make. There have been reports that the Maple Leafs do not want to rush Hildeby up to the NHL level, but Samsonov has simply been so bad that the team was left with no choice.

On Monday, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe shared some insights on what might come next for Hildeby and Keefe's answer appeared to reinforce the reports regarding the Maple Leafs' desire to keep Hildeby in the American Hockey League. Keefe made it very clear that his primary goal as far as Hildeby is concerned is getting the young goaltender ready to play in the NHL.

"Take each day as it comes and try to get him up to speed at the NHL level ... get him comfortable," said Keefe. "He's the second guy right now. Your job is to be ready."

It is very clear that Keefe intends to protect Hidleby during what is likely to be a limited tenure with the main roster. In fact Keefe even hinted at the fact that they may use Martin Jones in back to back games in order to avoid thrusting Hildeby into the net too soon.

"We'll take it a day at a time in terms of that," said Keefe of playing Hildeby on the second night of a back to back.

There is a lot of excitement around Hildeby but fans may have to wait a while longer before seeing him in action if all goes according to plan.
