Shesterkin earns a place among legends.

The New York Rangers appear to be on their way to handing the Carolina Hurricanes yet another loss on the road in these 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, and if the Rangers do close this one out goaltender Igor Shesterkin is likely to be declared a hero for the victory.

Not only has Shesterkin been solid in front of the net for the Rangers tonight, stopping 24 of the 26 shots he has faced thus far but he now has also joined an elite list of just 4 National Hockey League goaltenders. That's because on top of having a solid night in front of the net for the Rangers, Shesterkin has also had a multi point night with a pair of assists in the game. So rare is this feat that, according to the Rangers official account, only 4 other goaltenders have ever done it before.

The four goaltenders in question were all considered elite during their careers in the NHL, and that also seems to be the trajectory that Shesterkin has put himself on in the last few seasons. The goaltender who most recently accomplished the feat was Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne who did it against the Chicago Blackhawks in 2017, prior to that we have to go all the way to 2004 when Jose Theodore did it with the Montreal Canadiens against their bitter rivals the Boston Bruins, before that it was Tom Barrasso in 1993 with the Pittsburgh Penguins over the New Jersey Devils and 2 years prior Grant Fuhr managed the feat in 1991 as a member of the Edmonton Oilers over the Los Angeles Kings.

This now has Shesterkin with 3 points in these Stanley Cup playoffs and that in and of itself in as impressive feat when points are hard to come by. For some context, Carolina Hurricanes forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who as a reminder counted for $6.1 million against the cap this season, has just a third of Shesterkin's points in these playoffs with only a single assist over 12 games played.

Is there anything he can't do?
