Helping Boston solve a roster problem is the last thing Leafs fans want to see…
The latest rumour out of Toronto has Maple Leafs fans angry as the team is reportedly willing to make a meaningful trade with its biggest rival.
According to NESN’s Victor Barbosa, The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa has suggested the Boston Bruins should attempt to acquire Matias Maccelli from the Maple Leafs. This is a tough one to swallow in Toronto as the Bruins have spent the better part of a decade turning Toronto’s playoff dreams into recurring nightmares.
Shinzawa believes Maccelli, a 25-year-old left-shot winger, could give the Bruins a much-needed offensive boost within their top nine. It’s not a new idea either. Barbosa notes Boston was linked to Maccelli earlier this month and had already tried to acquire him from the Utah Mammoth before he was eventually dealt to Toronto in the offseason.
From a purely transactional standpoint, there is logic to the rumour. Maccelli has struggled to find consistency with the Leafs this season, though his production has ticked up recently. Toronto could keep him and hope that upward trend continues, or flip him now while there’s still some market value, and if Boston is willing to pay.
But this isn’t just about asset management. It’s about optics. It’s about history. It’s about watching a player you couldn’t fully unlock suddenly thrive in black and gold, scoring timely goals against you when it matters most.
Trading within the division is risky enough. Doing business with Boston feels borderline reckless.
Yes, the Leafs might have to be creative ahead of the trade deadline, with the need to shake things up. But helping a direct rival address a roster need while you’re still searching for solutions? That’s the kind of move that gets remembered for all the wrong reasons.
This could just be a rumour… but for now, it has fans in Toronto quite angry at the fact that it could materialize. Because this trade feels like the Maple Leafs are playing with fire.
