This is rarely comforting this close to the deadline..
For the first time in years, the Pittsburgh Penguins are positioned to be buyers at the trade deadline. They’re sitting second in the Metropolitan Division. They’re in playoff position. They have momentum.
And yet, the loudest conversation surrounding the team isn’t about adding pieces, it’s about Evgeni Malkin’s future.
According to Josh Yohe, general manager Kyle Dubas addressed Malkin’s situation this week, calling him a “franchise icon,” praising his “spectacular season,” and emphasizing that he deserves respect.
But then came the line that has Penguins fans uneasy.
Dubas described Malkin’s future as a “private matter” and said he and Malkin’s agent, J.P. Barry, would speak again at a later date.
Malkin, who has 47 points in 45 games this season, is in the final year of his contract and will turn 40 in July. While the Penguins are reportedly looking to get younger, cap space isn’t the issue, Pittsburgh has roughly $48 million available next season.
Money isn’t the obstacle, but direction might be.
Malkin’s agent met with Dubas’ camp last week, and it’s believed the veteran forward and GM connected again in person within the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, Malkin has made it clear he wants to stay. Captain Sidney Crosby also hopes his longtime teammate sticks around, especially with Crosby himself under contract through the 2026-27 season. For a team pushing for the playoffs, the timing feels delicate.
When a GM calls something “private,” it rarely means simple. And in Pittsburgh, that’s enough to make people nervous.
