Police are investigating a reported shooting at the former NHL player’s residence.
A disturbing incident unfolded Tuesday evening involving the Los Angeles home of former NHL player Sean Avery and his wife, model Hilary Rhoda, after reports of a shooting at their Hollywood Hills residence.
According to multiple reports citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation, including TMZ, the incident involved a neighbour who is now in custody. The situation is still being actively investigated by law enforcement.
Authorities were initially called to the home around 10 a.m. Tuesday following reports of criminal threats. The caller reportedly identified the suspect as a neighbour who had been allegedly harassing and threatening contractors working at the property over an ongoing dispute.
However, responding officers at the time reportedly did not find any immediate evidence of threats upon arrival, and no official report was taken during that first visit.
Later in the day, the situation escalated.
Law enforcement sources say that police were called back to the area shortly before 5 p.m. after receiving a separate report of possible shots fired. During the incident, a contractor working on the property was present when gunfire was discharged outside the home.
Avery also alleges his L.A. neighbour tried to “frame” him with “two hookers".
“My crazy neighbour shot out the tires of the contractor building a new deck at the house. As this is going on, there’s a standoff at the house. He’s inside. He’s got guns,” Avery explained in Instagram stories as he sat on set of a movie.
“He calls two hookers and tries to frame me. He sends two hookers up to the house for me — I’m not even there — as a smokescreen,” Avery added.
“The hookers… I don’t even know what’s going on with the election. F***ing Spencer Pratt, the hockey game, the hookers … wow!”
Reports indicate that at least one vehicle tire belonging to the contractor was struck during the shooting. Fortunately, there are currently no known injuries connected to the incident.
At the time of the shooting, neither Avery nor Rhoda were inside the residence.
The LAPD has confirmed it responded to the area and that the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
As of now, many details remain unclear, including what may have triggered the escalation from earlier reported tensions to gunfire later in the day.
Avery spent a dozen seasons in the NHL toiling for the Detroit Red Wings, Kings, Dallas Stars, and New York Rangers. He scored 90 goals and added 157 assists in 580 games. But he was better known for racking up penalty minutes and led the league twice in that category. He retired back in 2012.
