Should the NHL have suspended Prout for this vicious attack on a rookie?

Clearly trying to injure a rookie.

I'm not for the wussification of the game of hockey, and for safety reasons there certainly has been some of that going on over the last few years, but even the most violent of fans would be likely to take objection to this kind of attack on a rookie.

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Dalton Prout should frankly be ashamed of himself after his vicious attack on the Pittsburgh Penguins Sergei Plotnikov, a rookie. Prout unleashed a torrent of crosschecks to the back of Plotnikov, many of which came very close to his neck and head and could have seriously hurt the young man.

This wasn't a question of a light crosscheck to simply make someone uncomfortable and move them out of the way either, you can clearly see the force and the vicious intent behind each one as he slams his stick on Plotniokov over and over again.

Prout was given a double minor for "high sticking" on the play, absurd. and will reportedly not face any discipline from the league.
