It appears that there is a rift developing between Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and his star pupil forward Sidney Crosby.

Sirius XM’s Matthew Barnaby, who is a former Penguin himself, said that there are developing issues between the two-time league MVP and Lemieux, a franchise icon.

Here is the full quote from Barnaby:

“But the more and more I looked into it, the more I found out, people with the same sentiments that there’s a big falling out between Mario (Lemieux) and (Sidney) Crosby. Now whether that pushes them to move him at some point? Whether he wants to move? That I don’t know, “ he said.

When asked if the falling out has something to do with Crosby’s contract, the coaching staff, the team's recent performance, or not winning more than one Stanley Cup, Barnaby had this to say:

“I’ve heard over coaching, I’ve heard also after the (2014) playoffs when they lost out,” Barnaby said. “Maybe the personnel isn’t right?”

The news of this falling out comes as a surprise, as the two seemed to be on the best of terms since Crosby entered the league. When Crosby was drafted in 2005-06, he lived in Lemieux’s residence for several years as he developed.

Fellow star forward Evgeni Malkin, spoke out about the team's recent struggles saying:

“Everything [is wrong]. We’re not playing right. We’re not working hard. We’re mad at each other. We need to stop, look in the mirror, and start working.”

The Pens rank third in the Metropolitan Division with 24 points at 12-8-0 on the season. However, Crosby is in the midst of the worst season of his career. He has just three goals and 11 points in 20 games and his points per game average has slipped over the last two seasons.

The Penguins rank 26th out of 30 teams in the NHL scoring 2.20 goals per-game. With forwards like Crosby, Malkin and newcomer Phil Kessel, the team should be firing on all cylinders offensively.

Unfortunately, it simply hasn't come together for them this season.
