Sidney Crosby gives an official at the World Championship a friendly reality check.
Hockey Canada made a surprise announcement roughly one week ago when they revealed that youngster Macklin Celebrini would be captaining the Canadian squad at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship of Hockey.
It meant big shoes for Celebrini to fill and that was only amplified when it was announced that Crosby would be joining the Canadian roster alongside Celebrini at the event, with many believing that Crosby himself should be wearing the "C" over Celebrini.
While no such change has been made, I do think the concerns were overblown with Crosby showing over the weekend that he still very much fills the role of Canada's captain despite not wearing the "C" across his chest.
During a game against Italy in which Canada was dominating both in terms of shots on goal and on the scoreboard itself, Crosby was caught on camera admonishing one of the officials for the way the game was being called. To be clear Crosby kept his cool and simply pointed out some facts to the official, including the number of shots that had been fired off by both teams and the penalties that had been called.
"I get that's a penalty but the shots are 23-7 and we have 2 penalties and they have 1" said Crosby to the official behind the camera.
It may have been difficult for a young player like Celebrini to make that kind of a statement to an official, but Crosby commands so much respect in the game that the response from the official on the ice displayed nothing but the utmost respect for the Canadian superstar.
"I know you guys are fighting through it and I appreciate it," said the official acknowledging Crosby's complaint.
Crosby did after all make a fair point with the Canadians controlling the puck most of the game and relatively few penalties being called against the Italians.
"We're trying to work for it and we're not going down," said Crosby indicating that the Canadians were not trying to sell calls to the IIHF officials.
It was a great little interaction and one that shows that Crosby still is the main man for Canada despite not wearing his usual letter in this tournament.
