Sidney Crosby’s bold comments on Penguins’ next coach!
Not sure how general manager Kyle Dubas is supposed to read into this… Story below:
The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the NHL teams looking for a new head coach ahead of the 2025-26 season. In recent days, the buzz has been loud around former Vancouver Canucks bench boss Rick Tocchet, who is highly coveted around the league and is likely to end up with the Philadelphia Flyers.
When Crosby spoke with Josh Yohe on the Athletic, he did not mention how the Penguins should or should have gone after Tocchet. The Pens captain, who is known to be a huge Tocchet fan, simply put it this way:
“Yes, that is someone I’m familiar with,” Crosby said. “But the thing with him is that he’s going to have a ton of teams after him.”
Yohe asked Crosby about his role in the coach’s search in Pittsburgh and his answer surprised many, including the insider.
“I don’t have any say on who our next coach is going to be,” Crosby said. “And I prefer it that way.”
“Because, ultimately, I’m a hockey player,” Crosby added. “I’m not out there coaching games. I am not a manager.”
While Crosby did specify the following:
“If he wants my opinion on someone who’s out there, and someone who is out there that I might have had as coach before or someone I’ve heard about, then sure, then I’ll share my opinion,” Crosby said.
he pressed on:
“It really doesn’t matter. I don’t care. “I really don’t. I just want to win, and I want the person behind the bench who is going to give us the best chance to win.”
Crosby appears to be finally ready to trust general manager Kyle Dubas, who is just a year and a half older than him.
“Kyle’s going to have decisions to make. He’s going to do what is best for this team.”
I guess it all comes down to Dubas and Penguins’ management to find the best coach for Sid and the team.
